The piece features intricate high-relief casting and engraving, with gold (gilt) accents and polychrome painted details.

Symbolism & Design:
In Chinese Feng Shui, the Pixiu is a highly revered creature believed to attract wealth and ward off evil spirits.

The Beast: The Pixiu is depicted in a crouching, recumbent pose. It features a fierce expression with a wide, open mouth, bulging eyes, and prominent horns. Its beard and paws are accented with a deep, rich red pigment.

The Body: The body is heavily textured, featuring stylized cloud and flame motifs in high relief. The surface is adorned with mottled gold (gilt) leaf/paint over a dark, aged bronze base, giving it an antique, time-worn appearance.

Function: The hollow body serves as an incense burner. The lid (which is the head of the beast) can be lifted to place incense inside, allowing fragrant smoke to billow dramatically out of the Pixiu's open mouth. See less
