1959

Stiffel brought the world the famous tension pole lamp in the early fifties! It revolutionized modern lighting! For the first time floor lamps were thin, visually light and most importantly, modern! Nothing like it had ever been seen before and it immediately had imitators. Everyone wanted a "futuristic" tension pole lamp!

70 years later this is just as true and the most coveted of all tension pole lamps is the Stiffel Futura! The Futura came out in 1959 and was made for only 2 years. Where most pole lamps had 2 or 3 lamps, the FUTURA had 4! Each lamp was controlled by its own push button on a solid brass pole. Another "master" button powered up those buttons. 5 buttons in all for the "push button" space age of the 1950s!

Stiffel believed their FUTURA was so advanced they advertised it as "Made for the Year 2000" = a full 41 years into the future. Amazingly after 67 years it is STILL the most advanced tension pole lamp ever made. The complexity and quality of the components of 1959, was sadly never to be exceeded.

As a result, these lamps are snapped up by collectors whenever they come up to market. In the past 20 years approximately 16 FUTURA tension pole lamps have come to major marketplaces.

Here is an original 1959 Stiffel FUTURA with original electrics, beautiful brass and with the two tone silver brass finish to the pole. This lamp is a treasure that some people seek to acquire their entire lives. Age appropriate wear to the brass, aluminum. Aluminum poles have a small fissure at the end which are ubiquitous to these lamps at this age, Swivels and shades present beautifully with a wonderful "starlite" perforations in the cones. When equipped with clear bulbs, the FUTURA creates cool, abstract light patterns on nearby walls. The solid brass switches, center pole and swivels can be polished to as high a glossy shine as one desires. It is an amazing and gorgeous survivor!
