This is a rare and wonderful architect’s table or standing writing desk from Lexington’s discontinued Arnold Palmer Home Collection.
The piece was modeled after fine 18th century architect’s table designs with slanted tops that helped reduce neck and back strain and sliding surfaces on each side for placing candlesticks. The desks were favored by not just architects but also thinkers, artists, and writers. Thomas Jefferson had an architect’s table, and so did Gustave Flaubert.
Today, the architect’s table can be used as a book stand (for a dictionary or a prized bible) or as a display surface for propping up framed works of art.
This Lexington Palmer Home mahogany architect’s table is a one-piece desk case on a frame form. The desk surface has a sloped front with inset green leather writing surface and a ledge that keeps documents in place. The desk top lifts to reveal a spacious interior storage compartment. Additional storage space is offered on the top wood gallery and the dovetail jointed frieze drawer below. Two sliding panels (one on each side) provides additional surface areas. The desk case rests on straight square legs joined by a box stretcher. The front stretcher is clad in brass to form a durable footrest for the user.
The 1990s era architect’s table is in excellent vintage condition. The desk is solid, heavy, and very well made. The leather is unmarked and in perfect condition. Scattered scratches and marks on the wood. Some wear or patina on the brass footrest. Overall, this is an impressive and handsome piece. Please see photos for more details about the condition of the desk.
The table measures 34" wide, 26" deep and 48" tall with a 29.5” knee clearance.
