An exceptional example of early Victorian English stoneware, this circa 1850s Convolvulus pitcher by T.J. & J. Mayer features an extraordinary relief-molded botanical design inspired by the natural world.
The sculptural body resembles the textured bark of a tree trunk, with delicate white morning glory blossoms, heart-shaped leaves, and curling vines climbing across its rich brown surface. An elegant branch-form handle and irregular naturalistic rim complete the design.
Produced at Dale Hall Pottery in Longport, Staffordshire, England, the Convolvulus design was registered on December 19, 1850. The underside bears the T.J. & J. Mayer maker's mark, British registration diamond, and impressed pattern No. 50.
The design also has notable historical documentation. Convolvulus was included in *The Art Journal Illustrated Catalogue: The Industry of All Nations* (1851), associated with London's Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace. A related example is featured in the University of Wisconsin–Madison publication *What's in a Jug? Art, Technology, Culture*, which explores the artistry and cultural significance of Victorian relief-molded ceramics.
At 9.5 inches tall, this substantial antique pitcher is equally compelling as a collectible example of 19th-century English pottery or as a sculptural decorative accent. Its organic form and botanical ornamentation complement English country, traditional, cottagecore, and eclectic interiors.
The pitcher displays age-related wear, including several small chips and nicks along the upper and lower edges, as shown in the photographs. The elaborate raised floral decoration appears remarkably well preserved, with no obvious missing flowers or vines. Please examine the detailed photographs for condition.
