36 x 30. Great condition minor age related ware. Aluminium sign made with vinyl stickers and hand painting. What a wonderful rare hard to fine piece of new jersey as well and basketball history. This sign was made in 1969 to commemorate the 50 year anniversary of the Passaic high school basketball team undefeated streak. There were a few of these signs made at the time and hung at various intersections in the town of Passaic. Please read the history of the Passaic high school basketball team and the basketball hall of fame coach Ernest pops Blood below.
The Passaic High School boys' basketball team, famously known as the "Wonder Team," remains one of the most legendary squads in American sports history, defined by an mind-boggling 159-game winning streak that spanned from December 17, 1919, to February 6, 1925.
The "Wonder Team" Dominance
The team routinely crushed opponents using a style of play that was completely ahead of its time. Rather than relying on individual showmanship, they utilized a rapid, relentless "pass-pass-pass" offense where the ball barely ever hit the hardwood before finding the basket. They blew teams out by astronomical margins—sometimes pushing scores into the 90s while holding opponents to single digits.
Standout players included:
Colonel John Roosma: Regarded by many as Passaic's greatest player, who later starred at West Point.
Bobby Thompson: Scored an astonishing 1,000 points during the 1921–22 season alone, earning himself a feature in Ripley's Believe It or Not.
Coach Ernest "Pop" Blood
The mastermind behind this dynasty was head coach Ernest A. "Pop" Blood (also affectionately known as "Prof"). Blood was a brilliant, analytical tactician who demanded strict team discipline and prioritized a quick-passing collective offense over individual stardom.
His unmatched success and revolutionary approach to the game earned him an induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach in 1960.
The 50-Year Anniversary Tribute
The legendary status of the team came full circle roughly 50 years after their historic run began. In 1973, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame took the rare step of electing all of the Passaic "Wonder Teams" into the Hall of Fame as a collective group.
Shortly after, in April 1974, the historic squad was honored with a massive 50-year anniversary tribute in New Jersey. Former players, local sports figures, and contemporaries gathered to celebrate the Golden Anniversary of a team that didn't just win games, but permanently changed how basketball was played
