This work depicts Saint Sebastian and is stylistically linked to the model established by the Italian painter Guido Reni—a composition widely disseminated in various versions (such as those held by the Museo del Prado, the Louvre, and the Gallerie dell'Accademia)—or to interpretations from the 17th-century Emilian or Neapolitan Baroque schools. It shows Saint Sebastian—a Christian martyr and officer of the Roman Guard—bound to a tree trunk or post and pierced by the arrows of his martyrdom. Baroque style, characterized by the dramatic use of light and shadow (chiaroscuro), the upward gaze toward the heavens, and the idealized rendering of the saint's anatomy. Good condition. See less
