This striking piece is a 19th-century Korean Bandaji, or blanket chest. It features a drop-front opening mechanism, highly stylized iron hardware plate extensions and auspicious symbolic engravings, which one can always use.
UTILITY: Known as a Bandaji, which literally translates to "half-closing," the top half of the front panel drops downward on iron hinges. This allowed families to store folded bedding, clothing, or valuable documents inside while using the flat top surface to stack additional blankets or everyday items.
MATERIALS: The chest is primarily constructed from elmwood or ash on the exterior panels, prized in traditional Korean furniture making for its bold, expressive grain patterns. The dramatic, wavy lines across the front face are characteristic of wood cut to emphasize natural aesthetic value. The interior shows a lighter, utilitarian secondary wood lining (typically pine or paulownia), which functions to absorb moisture and preserve textiles or paper stored inside.
HARDWARE: The elaborate black ironwork serves a dual purpose of structural reinforcement and spiritual protection, notably the the Swastika/Manji Symbol (卍). Prominently stamped into the iron plates, this ancient Buddhist motif represents good fortune, eternity, and abundance.
The cast-brass fish lock hanging on the main latch also has deep cultural meaning. Because fish do not have eyelids and keep their eyes open even when asleep, they traditionally symbolize vigilance and protection against thieves or evil spirits. It also signifies wealth and fertility due to the abundance of eggs fish lay.
Lastly, the fork-like brass implements are traditional split-spring keys used to release the tension inside the horizontal padlock body.
Signature/Maker’s Mark: Nonexistent.
