On offer is a beautiful 19th-century Georgian-style mahogany chest of drawers. While it mimics 18th-century Chippendale brasses, its refined woodwork, crossbanded inlay and distinct construction details point to a high-quality 19th-century interpretation. This piece offers highly organized storage with its classic "2 over 2" configuration. It has two small side-by-side drawers over two full-width long drawers. Further, it measures a very compact 29 inches wide x 18.25 inches deep x 30.25 inches high, which makes it perfect for today’s tighter living spaces.
APPEARANCE: The standout feature is the beautifully executed top surface. A wide border of striking crossbanded flame mahogany veneer surrounds a rich mahogany center panel edged by fine satinwood or boxwood stringing (the light contrast line). The veneer sections meet at diagonal mitered corners, exemplifying excellent craftsmanship.
The side panels show a gorgeous, highly consistent vertical ribbon stripe mahogany grain pattern, typical of select cuts used in the 19th century. The back view shows a large, solid, stained panel configuration rather than rough, hand-split 18th-century boards. It is well-preserved, structurally sound, and clean.
The drawers open with ornate brass swan-neck handles mounted on highly decorative, pierced Chippendale-style backplates. These are accompanied by matching keyhole escutcheons. The brass has developed a gentle, authentic aged patina in the recessed details.
CRAFTSMANSHIP: The drawer edges fit tightly and flush into the frame, and are finished with a subtle, clean edge profile that emphasizes the wood grain. The side view of the open drawer reveals finely cut, thin handmade dovetail joints. The drawer sides are made of clean, solid oak or chestnut, indicating premium construction. The drawer bottoms are clean, wide, solid wood planks running side-to-side, showing typical 19th-century planing marks. Brass strike plates are neatly inset on top of the drawer fronts where the lock bolts engage.
The chest stands on an elegant swept bracket foot base. The front features a gracefully undulating, scrolled apron that flows seamlessly into the French-style flared feet, giving the compact piece a very light and elegant stance.
Signature/Maker’s Mark: Nonexistent.
