Step right up — a complete vintage folk-art carnival: thirteen hand-painted figures with four wooden cage wagons, ready to display as a group or piece by piece.
The thirteen figures, 8 to 13 inches tall:
- Ringmaster in top hat and tails
- Fat lady in white, seated
- Handstand acrobat in red on green base
- Two tumbling acrobats, one green and one yellow
- Giraffe, white horse, polar bear, elephant with red blanket, lion, seated tiger
- Brown bear balancing on a red ball
- Seal balancing a red ball on its nose, on a painted pedestal block
The four wagons: three wheeled wooden cage wagons stenciled "ROYAL CIRCUS" — natural wood carrying the giraffe, red carrying the white horse, dark-stained carrying the polar bear — plus the green "ROYAL CIRCUS / DANGEROUS WILD ANIMALS" cage holding the lion, elephant, and tiger. Wooden spoked wheels with metal tires.
Maker: stylistically a match to the artist's 1992 carousel menagerie — hand-painted folk art by D. De La Ronde (also signed D. Delaronde), the American folk artist active in the late 1980s–1990s known for hand-painted resin holiday collectibles and carousel-style animals.
Provenance: this set was displayed in the center hall of the American Folk Art Museum in New York City as part of a holiday display around the time the museum's 45 West 53rd Street building opened (December 2001).
Condition: very good vintage condition. Paint is bright with only minor wear at high points consistent with age and careful display. Wagons are solid, wheels turn. Please study the photos — they are part of the description.
Measurements: figures 8–13 in. tall (tallest is the giraffe at 13 in.); each of the three wheeled wagons approx. 14 in. L × 14 in. H × 9 in. D; the green "Dangerous Wild Animals" cage 34 in. L × 14 in. H × 8 in. D.
Shipping: a bulky multi-box shipment — each figure individually wrapped, wagons crated. Buyer pays shipping; or free local pickup from the storage unit in East Rutherford NJ.
