Historical Provenance & Gallery Labels
The reverse of this charming 1897 coastal painting preserves an intriguing collection of historical inscriptions and labels, offering valuable insight into its identification and collecting history.Of particular importance is an aged inventory label from Thos. Agnew & Sons, bearing Stock No. 27430. Established in the nineteenth century, Agnew's became one of Britain's most distinguished fine-art dealerships, handling important European paintings for generations of prominent collectors. An additional printed historical label identifies the work as No. 47, Alfred Stevens (1823–1906), Royan, and records its execution in 1897, with the notation “Signed, and dated on reverse.” Further handwritten inscriptions remain visible directly on the wooden panel.Together, these surviving labels and inscriptions provide a compelling documentary record of the painting's historical identification and association with the international art trade.
Description
The Couple Romantic Overlooking the Sea (Royan) (1897) is a spectacular example of Alfred Stevens' late career, capturing a fleeting moment of seaside leisure with an exquisite blend of academic rigor and late-nineteenth-century Impressionist sensibility. The painting transports the viewer to a sun-drenched hillside overlooking the Atlantic coast at Royan, France. Two elegantly attired figures take center stage, resting amidst the golden, dry grasses of a coastal meadow. True to Stevens’ lifelong obsession with fashion and class, the figures are rendered with careful attention to silhouette—the woman in an expansive, warm pink gown and her companion reclined in a sharp, dark coat and fashionable hat. Above them, a pair of slender trees tilt dramatically against a brilliant, azure sky, their dense crowns painted in warm ochre, amber, and deep sienna tones that suggest the transition of seasons or the brilliant glare of afternoon light. In the background, the composition opens up to a vibrant blue sea where white sails slice across the water, providing a beautiful point of depth and a sense of open-air freedom. The setting of the canvas, explicitly localized by the artist's inscription, highlights the historic town of Royan, a premier, ultra-luxury Belle Époque resort nestled on France's Côte de Beauté (Coast of Beauty) along the Gironde estuary. During the late 19th century, this vibrant coastal destination transformed from a quiet fishing enclave into a glamorous hotspot where the wealthy Parisian bourgeoisie, artists, and aristocrats flocked to "take the sea waters" amidst grand casino architecture and eclectic cliffside villas. Attracted by its luminous Atlantic light, master painters like Gustave Courbet and later Pablo Picasso temporarily set up studios in the area. Stevens' composition likely captures vacationers gazing from the high, grassy ridges of Pontaillac or the Pointe du Chay. Because old pre-war Royan was completely destroyed by Allied bombing campaigns in World War II and subsequently rebuilt in a radically different modernist style, this 1897 panel stands as a rare, highly romantic historical window into the vanished grandeur of the resort's golden age.Rather than the smooth, porcelain finish of his early interior scenes, this 1897 work showcases a highly textured, rapid brushwork. Stevens utilizes broken color and heavy impasto to build up the grasses and foliage, absorbing the lessons of his Impressionist contemporaries while maintaining his distinct, poetic approach to modern life.
Artist Biography: Alfred Émile Léopold Stevens (1823–1906)
Alfred Stevens was a master Belgian painter who achieved immense international fame as the premier visual chronicler of the elegant modern woman and high-society Parisian life. Positioned uniquely between strict academic virtuosity and avant-garde Impressionism, his technical skill earned him the highest honors of the Belle Époque.
Lineage & Formal Training: Born in Brussels to a prominent family of art connoisseurs and collectors, Stevens was immersed in fine art from childhood. He began formal training at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels under François-Joseph Navez (a chief pupil of Jacques-Louis David). In 1843, he relocated to Paris, securing a coveted spot at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he received personal artistic critiques from the legendary Neoclassical master Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres.
The "Poet of the Modern Woman": While his early 1850s debuts leaned toward social realism—such as his 1855 masterpiece What is Called Vagrancy (Ce que l'on appelle le vagabondage)—Stevens found his true calling capturing the opulent domestic interiors of the Second French Empire. His unrivaled ability to render the tactile surfaces of exotic cashmeres, heavy silks, satins, and tortoiseshell decor deeply impressed critics. He became a fixture at the imperial court of Napoleon III, balancing high-society elite circles with the Parisian bohemian underground. The celebrated critic Théophile Gautier famously crowned his collective output as "The poem of the woman of the world."
Champion of the Avant-Garde & Japonisme: Operating at the epicenter of the modern art movement, Stevens was a regular at the iconic Café Guerbois gatherings. He was a trusted, lifelong confidant to Édouard Manet, Edgar Degas, Berthe Morisot, and James Abbott McNeill Whistler. Notably, Stevens was a foundational pioneer of Japonisme in Europe, being one of the first Western artists to passionately collect and integrate Japanese woodblock prints and silks into his compositions. An active ally to the Impressionists, it was inside Stevens' own Parisian studio that the legendary art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel discovered and purchased his very first canvases by Manet in 1872.
Triumphs at the Expositions Universelles: Stevens reached the apex of financial and critical success at the great global world's fairs. At the 1867 Paris Exposition Universelle, he triumphed by entering 18 major canvases, winning a rare first-class gold medal. France rewarded his brilliance by naming him a Chevalier of the prestigious Legion of Honour in 1863, promoting him to Officer following the 1867 fair, and eventually elevating him to Commander. He later won successive Grand Prix awards at the Expositions Universelles of 1889 and 1900.
Later Years, Marine Landscapes & Rare Accolades: In the late 1880s, suffering from severe chronic bronchitis brought on by decades of breathing toxic paint fumes, his physicians ordered him out of closed studio spaces to breathe fresh sea air. This health advisory sparked a brilliant late-period pivot to open-air marine painting. Traveling along Normandy and southwest France, he captured coastal settings like Royan (1897) with loose, rapid, and expressive brushwork akin to Eugène Boudin. After a bad fall in 1899 left him using a wheelchair, his monumental legacy was honored in 1900 when the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris hosted a massive retrospective of over 200 of his works—the first time a living artist was ever accorded such an institution-wide honor.

Works by Alfred Stevens are represented in major international museum collections, including the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. His paintings remain admired for their refined observation of nineteenth-century society, sophisticated color harmonies, and distinctive contributions to European painting.
