Mint condition, from our complete and unusually fine copy of "Knave of Hearts", hardcover edition. Prints from this edition are larger, better executed, and printed on heavier paper than the common spiral bound edition. A fine-art copy of the colophon is included.
Maxfield Parrish (1870–1966), was an American painter and illustrator, born Frederick Parrish in Philadelphia. His father, artist Stephen Parrish, encouraged his early interest in art. Maxfield studied architecture at Haverford College, then art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Drexel Institute (now University), where he briefly studied with illustrator Howard Pyle. He adopted “Maxfield,” his paternal grandmother’s maiden name, as his professional name.
Parrish became a leading figure of the Golden Age of American illustration. He illustrated books and created images for magazines, advertisements, calendars, and murals. His work is known for carefully constructed, idealized settings and brilliant color. His famous painting Daybreak (1922) became one of the most widely reproduced American artworks. In the 1930s, Parrish largely left illustration and turned to landscapes, painting the New Hampshire scenery around his home in Cornish. He continued working into old age and dying in 1966, aged 95.
