Combining transparent brown smoked glass with milky white glass, its sculptural form reflects the sophisticated color combinations and modernist aesthetics characteristic of European glass design during this period.
The shape is particularly evocative of Italian and Scandinavian glass from the mid-20th century, with its simple silhouette, contrasting layers and carefully balanced proportions. The warm brown tone gives the piece a distinctly 1970s character, while the opaque white glass adds softness and visual depth.
Marinha Grande holds a special place in the history of Portuguese glassmaking. Glass production developed there from the 18th century, encouraged by the availability of high-quality sand and the nearby pine forests that provided fuel. Over the centuries, the region became Portugal’s principal center for glass production and developed a highly skilled tradition of craftsmanship. IVIMA, founded in 1955, became one of the most important Portuguese glass manufacturers of the second half of the 20th century, producing both functional and decorative glassware.
This vase remains in original vintage condition, with no chips or cracks. A distinctive example of Portuguese mid-century glass, it would make a beautiful addition to a vintage, Scandinavian or mid-century modern interior.
