The portrait depicts Alice Birket Foster and is painted with delicate handling, subtle colouring and intricate detail. The intimate scale of the work gives the portrait considerable charm, while the carefully observed features demonstrate accomplished watercolour technique. Copley Fielding was a prominent English watercolourist of the early 19th century. Born in Sowerby, near Halifax, in 1787, he became particularly celebrated for his landscapes and atmospheric watercolours and remained an influential figure in British watercolour painting until his death in 1855. The sitter has been identified as Alice Birket Foster. A suggestion that she may have had a personal or romantic connection with the artist accompanies the work, although this has not been independently documented and should therefore be regarded as part of its received history rather than established provenance. Presented in an ornate period brass frame dating from the 19th century, although the frame is not original to the painting.
