Painted in an Impressionist manner, the composition presents the flowers with expressive brushwork and a subtle, harmonious use of colour. The loosely handled petals and foliage give the work a lively painterly quality while retaining the traditional character of a floral still life. William Reynard Hood was born in Edmonton, London, in 1902 and later lived in Surrey. He died in Croydon in 1991. The painting is presented in an ornate frame with a distressed finish and areas of age-related wear, complementing the decorative character of the work.
