On offer is an authentic George III small mahogany chest of drawers, dating to the late 18th century (circa 1770–1790). It features a highly desirable compact format—often called a "bachelor's chest" or "gentleman's chest"—offering exceptional proportions that make it very practical for modern spaces.
FEATURES: The piece utilizes a configuration of four straight, graduated long drawers. The drawer depths progressively increase toward the baseline, which provides a classic and visually balanced weight. The unit is elevated by its traditional shaped bracket feet. The side profile reveals a subtle, decorative wavy apron connecting the front and rear feet. The rear view shows structurally robust internal corner blocking to support the framework.
MATERIALS: The chest is constructed from high-quality, solid old-growth mahogany. The drawer fronts display an attractive horizontal wood grain with a rich, deep reddish-brown color. The drawers are adorned with highly ornate brass swan-neck handles mounted on cast, pierced openwork backplates. The handle patterns feature delicate floral and scroll motifs. Each drawer retains a central, decoratively cast brass keyhole escutcheon that mirrors the rococo-influenced style of the handle backplates. The chest comes with a key.
CONSTRUCTION: This piece is an example of authentic period construction. The edges of the rectangular top feature a subtle thumb-molded profile. The drawer faces are finished with delicate cockbeaded moldings around their edges to protect the wood grain and hide gaps when shut. The back is made of wide, thick, hand-sawn vertical pine or oak backboards secured with original hand-forged nails. The drawer interiors show clean, wide hand-cut dovetail joints.
CONDITION: The top surface exhibits a deep, natural patina built from honest historic wear, including minor superficial scratches, light water staining and small faint indentations that highlight its 200+ year country-house history—ready to add to its history in yours.
Signature/Maker’s Mark: Nonexistent.
