Painted in oil on canvas, the work portrays Wrench with careful attention to facial expression, dress and character. Butler’s restrained use of colour and accomplished handling of light and detail give the portrait a dignified, traditional presence. As Butler was born more than fifty years after Wrench’s death, the portrait was necessarily painted posthumously, presumably using an earlier portrait or other likeness as its source. It is reported to have been commissioned by Wrench’s family, although this family commission is not independently documented. Charles Ernest Butler studied at the St John’s Wood School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from the late 19th century and worked across portraiture, figure subjects, mythology, genre scenes and landscapes. The painting is presented in an ornate gilded frame with age-related distressing and surface wear that complements its late Victorian character.
