An elaborately decorated Byzantine-style ceramic crucifix by French ceramic artist Marc Roussel, created in Vallauris in 1962. This substantial wall cross takes inspiration from the medieval Cross of Queen Gisela, combining richly gilded surfaces, jewel-like enamel decoration and a sculptural representation of Christ. The crucifix features a raised gilded corpus surrounded by intricate geometric ornamentation, with turquoise, emerald green, ruby red and sapphire blue glazes simulating precious gemstones. Hundreds of individually modelled pearl-like details create a densely textured surface, while the recessed bronze-toned panels carry inscriptions inspired by the medieval original. Roussel was associated with the Vallauris ceramic tradition and developed a distinctive decorative vocabulary influenced by Byzantine religious art. His workshop was particularly influential in the development of François Lembo, who subsequently became known for his own gilded ceramic mirrors, crosses and religious icons. The composition references the celebrated Cross of Queen Gisela, commissioned in the early 11th century by Queen Gisela of Hungary in memory of her mother. The original, preserved in the Munich Residenz Treasury, is an important example of Ottonian goldsmithing, distinguished by its gold surfaces, gemstones, pearls and enamels. Measuring an impressive 30 cm in height, this is a particularly elaborate example of Roussel's ecclesiastical-inspired ceramic work. The reverse is hand-signed Marc Roussel and dated 1962, providing an unusually specific record of its creation. Dimensions: Height 30 cm (11.81 in); width 22 cm (8.66 in); depth 1.5 cm (0.59 in). Condition: Very good vintage condition. Small chips to the two upper right-hand corners, with minor surface wear consistent with age. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
