Executed in oil on canvas, the work demonstrates the detailed and highly finished approach associated with traditional British still-life painting. The carefully arranged fruit provides the central focus of the composition, with close attention given to form, texture and tonal variation. The painting is an original work and is presented framed. Its substantial proportions of 65 by 55 cm give the composition considerable presence while retaining an intimate character appropriate to the still-life genre. George Lance was a British painter particularly associated with still-life subjects, and this dated example represents his work during the first half of the 19th century. The painting remains in excellent condition. It has probably been relined and may benefit from cleaning.
