Palermo, The Crying Girl, Oil on Board, 1971 Material: Oil on board A striking large-scale oil on board portrait entitled The Crying Girl by artist L. Palermo, dated 1971. An evocative example of 1970s figurative portraiture, the work depicts a crying young woman rendered with expressive detail and a carefully balanced use of colour. The composition has a strong emotional quality, with particular attention given to the sitter’s facial expression and features. The distinctive subject matter and period aesthetic give the painting an immediately recognisable 1970s character, while the generous proportions create considerable decorative presence. The work is dated 1971 and presented in its original shabby-chic style frame, which has a deliberately distressed and time-worn appearance.
