Lakota Messengers is a 1982 original lithograph by Frank Howell. It is an artist's proof, titled, inscribed Artist Proof, signed, and dated in red pencil. It comes as an unframed full sheet, about 18 1/2 by 34 3/4 inches, ready to be framed the way the buyer wants.
A figure in profile, eyes closed, leans into the wind. Long gray hair streams back, and one arm stretches out with the open hand reaching toward the right edge. Four crows travel with the figure. Three trail from the shoulders and one rides the outstretched arm, each bound with a band of pleated red cloth. A heavy brown blanket wraps the body. The left side of the sheet falls into deep black and oxblood, and the right side opens to a pale ochre sky. Up close, that sky shows the cracked, lace-like texture of a tusche wash. Tusche is the greasy lithographic ink that breaks into patterns as it dries on the stone or plate.
Crows turn up again and again in Howell's work, and he wrote and illustrated a book titled Gifts of the Crow Messengers. Lakota Messengers was also issued as a poster. This is the original lithograph.
Frank Howell (1937-1997) was born in Sioux City, Iowa. He served in the Marine Corps and taught art for eleven years, then moved to Colorado in 1968 to work full time. He opened Breckenridge Galleries there and later his own gallery in Santa Fe. He worked as a painter, printmaker, sculptor, and poet.
An artist's proof is one of a small group of impressions pulled outside the numbered edition and set aside for the artist. This one was signed in his lifetime.
It suits a few kinds of buyers:
Collectors. It's an early Howell lithograph with one of his strongest narrative images.
Designers. At nearly 35 inches wide, the composition reads like a frieze. It fills the long wall over a sofa or a sideboard, and the black, oxblood, ochre, and coral red sit well with leather, wood, and iron.
