an imposing art deco ceramic group depicting two pheasants arranged within a highly sculptural landscape. Extending to almost 56 centimetres in length, the composition combines an unusually strong architectural presence with the elegance and sense of movement characteristic of french decorative sculpture of the period.
the two birds are represented in contrasting poses: one rises vertically, its body poised and alert, while its extraordinarily long tail sweeps across the composition in a broad, fluid curve; the second bends towards the ground, introducing an opposing downward movement. Together, the two figures create a carefully balanced rhythm of vertical, horizontal and curving lines.
rather than standing upon a conventional flat plinth, the pheasants inhabit an irregular, almost rocky terrain, modelled with changing levels and undulating forms. This treatment gives the group depth and movement when viewed from different angles and transforms the base into an integral part of the sculpture.
particularly striking is the elaborate surface treatment. The bodies, wings and long tail feathers are richly modelled and covered by a distinctive textured white glaze, producing a subtly pearlescent, almost granular appearance as the surface catches the light. Against it, the deep grey of the base creates a sophisticated graphic contrast, emphasizing the silhouette of the birds and giving the entire composition a remarkably theatrical presence.
small details provide a final note of refinement: the eyes and beaks are picked out in black, as are the individual claws of the birds. Their remarkable survival contributes significantly to the visual integrity of the work.
monumental in proportion yet remarkably graceful, the group embodies the art deco fascination with the stylisation of the natural world, transforming the two birds into an elegant decorative composition in which movement, texture and silhouette become the principal expressive elements.
the sculpture is preserved in exceptional condition, with no cracks, chips or missing elements; even the delicate painted details of the eyes, beaks and claws remain exceptionally well preserved. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
