Vintage miniature ceramic vase designed by Gunnar Nylund for Rörstrand, Sweden, dating approximately to the 1950s. An elongated bottle form with rounded shoulders leads into a slender neck and flared rim. The deep charcoal-black glaze has a subtle sheen, allowing light to describe the curved surface while retaining a quiet, sculptural appearance. A strong accent within a miniature pottery collection, particularly alongside white or pale glazed pieces. Its clean silhouette also works beautifully as a single object against a light background.
Gunnar Nylund (1904–1997) was a ceramic artist of Danish and Finnish parentage whose career spanned Denmark and Sweden. Born in Paris, he worked at Copenhagen’s Bing & Grøndahl and co-founded the pottery that became Saxbo before joining Rörstrand in 1931, where he served as artistic director. Known for his sculptural forms and richly varied glazes, Nylund created everything from miniature vases and bowls to large vessels and animal sculptures. His miniatures express that same attention to proportion and surface on an intimate scale and remain collected examples of Scandinavian mid-century design. His work is held in collections including Sweden’s Nationalmuseum.
