This exceptional example of early 20th-century Chinese weaving perfectly captures the transition into the Art Deco aesthetic. Its expansive dimensions classify it as a true room size rug, ideal for anchoring a grand living space or formal reception area.

The palette is deliberately restrained and highly sophisticated, focusing on the interplay between the lustrous, subtly shifting ivory beige cream field and the deep indigo blue used for the primary motifs. This high-contrast approach emphasizes the graphic clarity characteristic of the period, moving decisively away from the dense patterning of earlier traditional textiles.

The design features scattered, elegant botanical sprays—including bamboo and stylized blossoms—that float across the open field. A central geometric medallion provides a subtle focal point, framed by traditional Chinese symbols that hint at Western influence. The composition relies heavily on negative space, distinguishing it from earlier, denser styles of antique floral rugs.

Woven from high-quality wool, this piece exhibits the superb craftsmanship expected of fine Chinese production from the 1920s. It represents a significant cultural intersection, blending traditional iconography with modern Western sensibilities, making this rare and preserved textile a superb addition to any collection of exceptional antique rugs.
