This exceptional square piece exemplifies the sophisticated design movement of early 20th-century Chinese weaving, blending traditional motifs with the emerging Art Deco sensibility. The stark contrast between the deep, saturated indigo field and the expansive, luminous border creates a dramatic focal point, characteristic of the finest antique rugs from this period.

The central field is rendered in a rich, almost midnight blue, providing a stunning backdrop for the delicate trailing vines and blossoms that emerge from the corners. This deep hue is expertly balanced by the surrounding ivory and beige tones of the primary border, which lend an air of lightness and refinement to the composition in a square format.

While the title suggests an allover pattern, the design cleverly utilizes negative space, focusing the intricate floral work—including stylized peonies and chrysanthemums—within the spandrels and along the inner frame of this square rug. Subtle accents of gold, notably the inclusion of small, stylized butterflies, add a layer of auspicious symbolism and visual texture.

Woven with luxurious wool and possessing a plush handle, this square Peking rug offers both historical significance and practical elegance. Its substantial dimensions make it an ideal choice for defining a living area or dining space, representing a monumental example of room size rugs from the Republican Era. See less
