This vintage ceramic dish is a bold, free-form piece of studio pottery, shaped like a wide, shallow, ruffled leaf or open flower. The outer rim rolls and ripples in irregular, wavy lobes that rise and dip around the edge, giving the silhouette a fluid, organic quality. Along the perimeter, fine radiating brush-like striations run from the rim toward the center. These lines suggest a hammered or combed metal surface and give the glaze a shimmering, feathered texture. The glaze is a deep, glossy russet and mahogany brown that shifts to burnt copper at the edges. From the center, ribbons of pale aqua, seafoam, and chalky white burst outward in a starburst pattern. The central basin is a crusty, cratered landscape of turquoise, teal, and near-black glaze, with tiny pinholes, bubbles, and pooled textures that resemble a lunar surface or a patch of verdigris. Small copper-toned flecks twinkle across the brown field. The contrast of glossy, molten glaze with the raw, rough-textured center makes the piece feel both volcanic and oceanic, and unmistakably handmade.
Broad and sculptural, this dish suits a coffee table, console, dining table, sideboard, or kitchen island, where it can hold fruit, keys, or decorative objects, or stand alone as an artistic centerpiece. It complements Organic Modern, Mid-Century Modern, Coastal, Japandi, and Eclectic interiors. The dish measures 17.5 inches (445 mm) wide, 13.75 inches (349 mm) deep, and 2 inches (51 mm) high. Condition is very good: the glaze is vibrant with a rich, varied patina, minor surface irregularities typical of handcrafted ceramics, and no visible chips, cracks, or repairs. For care, dust with a soft dry cloth and wipe gently with a barely damp cloth. Avoid abrasive pads and prolonged water contact, and display as a decorative piece or use with a liner for dry foods.
