A beautiful matching pair of round lidded carved polychrome lacquer storage jars, traditionally used as Go game stone containers.
Each jar measures 13 cm diameter × 9 cm height (5.12 in diameter × 3.54 in height).
The total weight for the pair is 1197 grams.
Rich multi-color raised relief carving decorates the exterior and lids, featuring mythical kirin beasts, scrolling cloud motifs, and auspicious symbolic patterns set against a deep red carved lacquer background. The raised carvings are highlighted with hand-painted blue, gold, green and yellow pigments.
The interior of each jar is finished in warm orange-red lacquer. The base of every jar is finished in black lacquer with inscribed mark characters “慎德堂製”. The bottom rim is ornamented with gilt fluted petal detailing.
These decorative lidded vessels work wonderfully as tabletop storage boxes, decorative display pieces, or collectible lacquer art objects. The pair is sold together.
