The scene shows Hanuman, the mythical monkey warrior, with Butsa Malee, a celestial woman he encounters during his journey to Lanka.

The artwork is associated with the traditional stone reliefs of Wat Pho in Bangkok, where scenes from the Ramakien were carved into temple walls during the 19th century. Rubbings like these were later made by hand using chalk or pigment to transfer the carved designs onto paper. The practice was eventually discontinued at Wat Pho to protect the original carvings.

A lovely example of traditional Thai artwork with intricate architectural details, mythical figures, and a beautiful story behind it.
