One World War II thousand-person-stitches belt from my late father's Japanese militaria collection.
Measuring 64” long (including both ties) by 6” at its widest (as shown), it was wrapped around the abdomen like a sash, and the ties knotted in front. It is made of plain cotton material, gathered and folded under, machine-sewn, and ready for hand-knotted stitches. It is decorated with pre-printed circles for where the stitches were to be sewn. Translated, the screen-printed blue and red kanji reads, 'May your military fortunes be long-lasting ', which was a popular Japanese expression during the war. The Rising Sun, symbol of Imperial Japan, is front and center along with unidentified black kanji, likely a serviceman's name. As would be expected, the printed colors and red stitches have faded over time.
Tradition required 1000 stitches, accompanied by prayers for the success of a serviceman's mission, to be sewn into the Senninbari and presented to him on his way to war. Only female relatives, neighbors, friends, and available volunteers from the community were invited to add a stitch. 1000 stitch items were considered powerful protections although their recipients were not expected to return home.
This belt has 4 simple pockets stitched into the side worn against the body. They are empty but would have held small sentimental items like photos, money, notes, or small mementos. Most often, paper money was tucked inside or coins sewn onto the belt as payment for passage to the afterlife.
This belt is in very good condition overall, showing evidence of being worn. It is soiled, stained, and genuinely 'grubby'.
These extraordinary belts are scarce and hauntingly beautiful. It was my father's wish to preserve the honor, courage, and sacrifice they represent. I hope the next owner of this belt will be as respectful a caretaker as my family was.
