Striking mid-century Cubist composition, signed and dated “J. Forneris. 66.” in the lower right. Fragmented, interlocking forms suggest a still life of pitchers, vessels and stringed-instrument curves, built from bold black and deep violet contour lines. Saturated panels of turquoise, tangerine orange, sunshine yellow and coral pink sit against soft graphite shading, and playful Greek key (meander) motifs run throughout and add rhythm and a graphic, architectural quality.
The paper is cut to an irregular, stepped silhouette and mounted on a deep black ground, which makes the colors glow and gives the piece a sculptural, modern presence. Presented in a black frame.
A versatile statement piece for a mid-century modern, Art Deco-inspired, eclectic or contemporary interior. It would work well over a sofa, in an entryway, in a study or as a gallery wall anchor, and it pairs beautifully with vintage furniture and neutral palettes.
