Offered is a late 19th Century to early 20th Century carved, chiseled and painted wood "Thousand Buddha" altar panel obtained on a trip to Thailand in the late 1990s.
These are known to come from the northern Lanna region and are wood-carved panels chiseled to house miniature votive figures or Buddha amulets (often made of clay, terracotta, or metal) arranged in a tiered, pointed architectural or monastic design, such as this one. These panels served as devotional shrines or altars, often displayed in temples or collected as spiritual artifacts representing a "thousand Buddha" or multi-Buddha motif.
NOTE: Several of the clay Buddha figurines are cracked or broken off. It was purchased and imported from Thailand in this condition.
The altar was professionally mounted on a display stand, and a separate stand was custom-made to elevate the sculpture off the floor.
The altar mounted on its base measures: 13.75" W x 4" D x 37" H
The custom rectangular pillar / stand measures 13.75" W x 4" D x 12" H
