Smith was particularly recognised for his marine subjects, and this atmospheric composition depicts boats gathered within a harbour setting. Executed with a subtle palette and careful attention to detail, the work captures the character of the waterfront through expressive yet controlled brushwork. Born in Chislehurst, Kent, Smith studied at Heatherley’s School of Fine Art and Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts. He was a member of the Wapping Group of Artists, Chelsea Art Society and Croydon Art Society. His work is represented in public and institutional collections, including Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum. The painting is presented in a gilt frame with a deliberately aged appearance and areas of wear consistent with its age.
