The earlier portrait, dating from circa 1760–1790, depicts an elderly gentleman and is executed in a distinctive primitive manner with delicate colouring and carefully observed facial detail. The companion portrait, dating from circa 1820–1830, depicts a young mother holding her baby. Although the two works are of different periods, they have long been presented together as a pair. It has been suggested that the elderly gentleman may represent the father of the woman in the later portrait, although this family relationship has not been documented. Both works display a restrained palette and appealing naïve character, offering an intimate glimpse into portraiture of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Presented under cleaned glass with museum mounts in old maple frames displaying light distressing and age-related wear.
