Originating from research conducted at the Ulm School of Design (Hochschule für Gestaltung) starting in 1954, this stool was designed by Max Bill, Hans Gugelot, and Paul Hildinger as a versatile tool, adaptable to the school's various uses. The version presented here, equipped with a drawer, represents an evolution of the model developed in the early 1960s during a workshop.
Its construction relies on the use of simple and standardized materials: particleboard for the sides and seat, and turned wood for the crossbar. An integrated drawer beneath the seat adds storage without altering the simplicity of the structure.
Serving as a seat, a small table, and a storage unit, this object directly embodies the philosophy of the Ulm School: functional, economical, and reproducible design, free of any superfluous elements, in which form derives from use and the method of manufacture.
Edition: produced by HfG Ulm, circa 1962. I have official proof of authenticity such as vintage catalogs,
designer records,
or other literature sources and take full responsibility for any authenticity issues arising
from
misattribution
