The composition is executed with a restrained and subtle use of colour, combining delicate watercolour washes with ink detailing to create a lively yet understated interpretation of the historic inn. The loose handling and expressive treatment lend the work an Impressionistic character, particularly in the architectural details and surrounding setting. Although unsigned, the work is identified as being by Roland Birch and bears the date 1978 to the reverse. It is presented within a simple wooden frame that complements the understated character of the composition. A charming example of late 20th-century British architectural watercolour, suitable for a traditional or eclectic interior.
