The composition is a faithful interpretation of Le Brun's celebrated treatment of the subject, originally painted in 1679. The scene employs a restrained, austere background contrasted with passages of vivid colour, creating a powerful religious composition characteristic of the Baroque tradition. Executed approximately a century after Le Brun's original work, the painting demonstrates the continuing influence of the French court painter on subsequent European artists. The canvas has been cleaned and relined with minimal intervention and is presented in what is believed to be its original gilded frame.
