A study in balance and proportion, this italian floor lamp attributed to stilnovo combines an architectural metal structure with the softness of opaline glass. Its slender silhouette and sculptural shade reflect the experimental approach to lighting that characterised italian design during the post-war period.
design
the lamp is built around a slender black lacquered metal stem, supported by a three-legged base constructed from bent metal rods. Its open structure creates a sense of lightness, with angular supports providing stability without interrupting the vertical composition.
at the top, an opaline glass diffuser forms the centrepiece of the design. Its distinctive double-conical silhouette, with a broad middle section tapering towards both ends, introduces a sculptural element to the otherwise restrained construction. When illuminated, the glass distributes a warm, diffused light, emphasising the contrast between the luminous shade and the dark metal framework.
brass fittings interrupt the black stem at two points, adding subtle warmth and rhythm to the composition. A decorative scalloped metal collar connects the glass shade to its conical holder, bringing a carefully considered detail to the transition between materials. A small switch integrated into the stem completes the functional arrangement.
founded in milan in 1946 by bruno gatta, stilnovo became associated with innovative italian lighting, combining new forms with industrial production techniques. This lamp reflects that design language through its geometric construction, restrained use of materials and attention to the quality of light.
with its slender proportions and distinctive glass diffuser, this floor lamp offers both ambient illumination and a sculptural presence. It is particularly suited to a reading corner, living room or an interior combining vintage and contemporary furniture.
condition
the lamp presents visible signs of age, including patination to the brass fittings and minor surface wear to the metal structure. The glass appears intact in the photographs, and the lamp is shown illuminated. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
