Fine 20th Century Pastel Portrait of a Girl in Black by Wilfred Glyndon May Material: Pastel, Paper, Glass, Wood A … Read more Fine 20th Century Pastel Portrait of a Girl in Black by Wilfred Glyndon May Material: Pastel, Paper, Glass, Wood A finely executed late 20th-century pastel portrait by British artist Wilfred Glyndon May (1922–2010), depicting a young woman dressed in black. The composition demonstrates May’s accomplished handling of the pastel medium, with subtle tonal variations, delicate use of colour and carefully observed detail. The restrained palette places particular emphasis on the sitter, creating an intimate and elegant portrait. May was a self-taught British artist who worked principally in watercolour, while also producing works in pastel, crayon and oil. His artistic development was strongly influenced by the work and technique of Sir William Russell Flint. His oeuvre encompassed portraits and figure studies, particularly female subjects and dancers, alongside landscapes, still lifes and floral compositions. After obtaining a degree in Civil Engineering from University College London in 1943, May served as an officer in the Royal Engineers during the Second World War. He subsequently pursued a career in engineering before retiring in 1981 to concentrate on painting full time. He exhibited around Epsom and Dorking and served as Chairman of the Epsom Art Group. Dating from the 1990s, the portrait is presented beneath glass within a simple grey frame. Presented in good vintage condition, this is an attractive example of May’s figurative work and a highly decorative British portrait.
