Elegant vintage poker chip box with Lucite chips, made in Italy, likely by Dal Negro in the 1980s.
The beautiful chip box is made of wood with a varnished finish and beveled edges. The contents are divided into two removable tiers with chips of different colors, shapes, and values. These chips are made of Lucite, a high-quality acrylic known for its brilliance, translucency, and durability. Italian sets from luxury brands like Dal Negro and French firms of the time often produced these acrylic chips with a distinctive "pearlescent" or translucent sheen, as seen here.
The storage system is organized horizontally on two levels of trays with removable handles, accessed via individual slots or rails.
The upper level holds five columns of electric blue chips with a value of 100 (a total of 288 chips) and five columns of burgundy or maroon chips with a value of 500 (a total of 284 chips). These chips are 3.3 cm in diameter.
The lower level contains three rows or columns of pearly orange-red chips, 4 cm in diameter and with a value of 1,000 (a total of 173 chips). It also holds two columns of gray chips with a value of 5,000 (a total of 115). Finally, there are two columns of rectangular chips. The first set, pearly light blue, has a value of 10,000 (56 chips) and measures 6 x 3 cm. The second and last set, pearly green, has a value of 50,000 and measures 7 x 4 cm (55 chips).
The circular chips are the standard for low and medium values, while the rectangular ones, known as "plaques," are reserved for high-value items and are used in high-stakes tournaments, adding tension to the game. There is no universal system that determines the value of each chip color. It can vary depending on the country, the game manufacturer, or the game itself.
It's the perfect game for a glamorous evening at home, an occasion to enjoy the latest cocktail or a good bottle of champagne. It makes an excellent gift for any board game enthusiast!
