The central … Read more Austrian flat-top pine trunk dated 1836, retaining its original hand-painted folk art decoration and a beautifully aged patina. The central painted panel features a lovely depiction of the Madonna, with the date 1836 displayed below. Two additional panels flank the central image, each depicting a pedestal vase filled with flowers. Traditional colors of red, blue, yellow, and green bring warmth and character to this charming example of European country craftsmanship.
Faint outlines of two painted square borders remain visible along the top, with similar decorative borders on each side. Original hand-wrought iron handles are positioned within the painted side panels, adding another element of traditional craftsmanship.
The flat top opens to reveal a clean interior with a small lidded compartment on the left, originally intended for storing personal belongings. Stains, minor cracks, and residual signs of old dried wormhole activity are visible along the interior bottom. The wormholes are no longer active.
Generations of use are reflected in the heavily worn and distressed original painted finish, with areas of natural pine showing through. Small cracks, gouges, and age related separation along seams and between planks are visible throughout. Additional signs of old dried wormhole activity are present but are no longer active. These signs of wear contribute to the authentic character of this nearly 200-year-old trunk.
Restored, stable, and ready to use. The sturdy flat top can be used for seating or displaying decorative objects.
