This antique cabinet from Italy has a rectangular top with gently projecting molded edges that extend slightly beyond the case below. Beneath the top sits a highly geometric drawer frieze that houses two smaller recessed-panel drawers (fitted with simple turned wooden knobs), each separated with smaller square-shaped recessed panels, and continue at the outer corners, creating a rhythmic façade. A molded horizontal rail divides the upper drawer section from the cabinet below, emphasizing the credenza's strong linear composition. The lower case houses a pair of recessed-panel doors, each fitted with the same turned knobs as the drawers, but slightly larger in scale. The lower case mimics the rhythmic geometric design as the top, with rectangular panels beneath the squared ones at top. The bottom is defined by a cleanly molded, stack apron wrapping the front and sides. Particular attention should be given to four boldly sculpted animal paw feet on which the chest is presented. Carved in high relief, each foot emerges dynamically from the base molding, with deeply undercut toes, carefully articulated claws, and pronounced knuckle details. The front feet project confidently angled outward from the case and serve almost as sculptural elements in their own right. Their substantial scale provides visual grounding while demonstrating the skill of the cabinetmaker. The wonderfully aged wood retains a rich, deep walnut, warm chestnut and mahogany-colored surface, with a lustrous patina throughout. Wear is consistent with age and use, including scattered surface marks, minor indentations, and areas of natural oxidation- all characteristics that contribute to the piece's authenticity and visual appeal. This late 18th century Italian cabinet would make an exceptional sideboard in a dining room, providing an elegant, concealed storage option while serving as a focal point beneath artwork or a mirror. It would also function beautifully in an entry hall, library, or living room, where its dramatic carved feet, rich patina, and architectural presence could be fully appreciated. See less
