This antique cabinet from Italy is crowned by a rectangular plank top with gently projecting edges above the case which is adorn with a molded thumbprint trim running beneath the front top edge, outlining the sides of the upper frieze which houses three drawers spanning the width of the case, and defining the vertical space between each drawer. The outer drawers are fitted with simple brass knobs, while the center drawer retains its key escutcheon. (Particularly appealing is the center drawer's original divided interior, thoughtfully fitted with compartments for organizing.) The lower case houses two paneled doors flanking a central stile. Each door is decorated with striking diamond-shaped molding within their center, providing depth and visual interest. The outer side of each door is framed with molded stiles, mimicking the center stile and adding a nice rhythmic pattern to the front facade. The doors open to reveal a spacious storage with interior shelving. The interior retains decorative paper lining with a repeating geometric motif, adding an unexpected layer of charm and providing a glimpse into the cabinet's long history of domestic use. A boldly beautifully carved, repeating gadroon trim enriches the bottom apron at front and sides. The buffet stands on shaped bracket feet at front with gentle floral cut profiles. These feet elevate the cabinet just enough to lighten its appearance while preserving its substantial presence. The walnut displays a warm chestnut-brown patina that has deepened beautifully over time, highlighting the natural grain movement, and subtle color variation. The cabinet presents very well overall, with minor surface scratches, small dents, crack separations, and other expected signs of age contribute to its authenticity and appeal without detracting from its functionality or structural integrity. This 19th century Italian buffet, with its exceptionally usable scale at just 52 inches wide, would serve beautifully in a dining room as a sideboard, as an elegant entry hall cabinet beneath a mirror, a stylish storage case in a living room, or function as a distinctive bar cabinet, or media console where antique character and practical storage are equally desired. Its compact proportions allow it to fit comfortably into spaces where larger European buffets would overwhelm the room. See less
