This is a matched pair of antique gilt bronze sculptures depicting Pixiu, mythical creatures revered in traditional Asian culture as symbols of wealth and protection. The figures are depicted in a seated, alert posture with their heads raised and mouths open in a roar, featuring detailed facial features, curled manes, and ridged spines. Their muscular bodies are adorned with stylized flame and scroll motifs on the haunches and shoulders. The bronze is extensively decorated with gold inlay (damascening) across the bodies, and the surfaces also show areas of red pigment (cinnabar) over a rich, dark patina with spots of green oxidation. The pair exhibits a warm, aged luster, characteristic of traditional metalwork.
