This impressive early 20th-century Japanese Tokoname-yaki style redware pottery vase is a striking example of Asian decorative art, combining superb craftsmanship with bold sculptural design. Standing over 11 inches tall, the vase features a finely thrown terracotta-red clay body with a gracefully balanced baluster form, rising to an elegant trumpet-shaped neck and broad flared rim.
Dominating the surface is a dramatic high-relief dragon rendered in a rich olive-green glaze that contrasts beautifully against the warm matte red clay. The dragon coils powerfully around the shoulders and neck, its sinuous body forming sculptural handles that seamlessly integrate with the vessel's shape. Expertly modeled details include individually articulated scales, flowing mane, whiskers, fierce open jaws, and sharply defined five-clawed feet, creating an extraordinary sense of movement and vitality.
Additional raised cloud motifs emerge across the body, enhancing the three-dimensional character of the piece and reflecting traditional East Asian symbolism associated with strength, wisdom, protection, prosperity, and good fortune.
The uncommon five-clawed dragon design, a feature more commonly associated with Chinese imperial imagery was incorporated into high-quality Japanese decorative wares intended for collectors.
The interior of the wide flared rim is finished in a beautiful cream-colored crackle glaze, displaying a fine network of age-old crazing that provides an elegant visual contrast to the earthy exterior. Viewed from above, the crackled glaze creates a striking depth and texture that complements the richly sculpted decoration below.
From every angle, this vase presents a captivating interplay of form, texture, and color. The warm terracotta body, glossy green dragon ornamentation, and finely detailed relief work combine to create a commanding display piece that functions equally well as decorative sculpture or as an impressive vase for floral arrangements.
