Early 20th Century Chinese Export Carved Celadon Jade & Brass Butterfly Peach Dish
Add a layer of symbolic history and texture to your tabletop with this exquisite Chinese Republic-period export dish.
The centerpiece features a masterfully hand-carved, translucent pale green celadon hardstone (jade or bowenite) dish. The carving utilizes a clever visual pun (rebus) traditional to Chinese art: it forms the silhouette of a butterfly (die) nested over twin peaches (tao), a design intended to wish its owner a sweet, joyful, and exceedingly long life.
The carved stone is securely cradled inside a custom-fit, ornate export brass basket mount featuring Art Nouveau scrollwork rims, four detailed cabriole feet, and a whimsical wavy overhead handle. The underside of the central crossbar is stamped with the historic "CHINA" export mark, verifying its authenticity as an early-to-mid 20th-century piece crafted for the Western luxury market.
Perfect as a formal candy/nut dish, an elegant jewelry vide-poche on a vanity, or a standout conversation piece styled on a stack of design books.
