Rare & Original Antique Framed Oil Painting for your consideration. The framed painting measures approx. 24 1/4 inches X 28 inches and approx. 2 inches thick. The painting measures approx. 18 1/2 inches X 22 1/4 inches. California, Oakland, Bay Area foothills, early 20th Century. Impressionism, landscape, oil on canvas, housed in original, museum-quality Art Nouveau frame. Hungarian-born, listed artist, Count Geza S. De Perhach (1875-1956). The artwork features a textured, impasto-laden woodland path winding past a rustic cottage or mill near a stream. Utilizing a rich, warm palette of autumnal coppers, deep ambers, and forest greens, the artist brilliantly captures the transitioning light characteristic of the Barbizon school and early California Plein Air movements. The painting is clearly signed "G. Perhach" in the lower-left corner. Very good vintage/antique condition. Shows wear commensurate with age. The original canvas is fully secure, showing minor, age-appropriate relaxation to the fabric that does not impact the stability of the paint. The painting could benefit from a realignment and tensioning if desired. The antique frame features a gorgeous, authentic patina with minor distressed wear to the edges that enhances its period charm. See photos. Displays gorgeous!
About the Artist:
Count Geza S. De Perhach was a fascinating figure in the early California art scene. Born into Hungarian nobility, he served as a first lieutenant in the 6th Hungarian Hussars and traveled extensively across the Holy Land painting biblical landscapes before emigrating to the United States. By 1912, historical records and the Oakland Tribune documented him as an "artist of note" residing in the historic Fruitvale / Joaquin Miller Hills of Oakland, California. Because much of his work was held in private regional estates and portrait commissions rather than commercial international galleries, pieces of this caliber are rare, fresh-to-market discoveries.
