An original nineteenth-century lithograph by the celebrated French artist Paul Gavarni, from his renowned satirical series Impressions de Ménage ("Impressions of Married Life"). Published by Chez Panier, Rue du Croissant, Paris, and printed by Aubert & Cie, the series presents a humorous yet penetrating examination of domestic life, exposing the small dramas, misunderstandings, and absurdities of marriage within bourgeois society. This plate depicts an amusing domestic confrontation. A woman, wrapped in a dressing gown beside a curtained bed, faces away from the viewer while an unseen admirer—or unwelcome visitor—peers timidly through the doorway. The accompanying caption reads: "— Si tu ne t'en vas pas, monsieur Charmé, \. tu vas voir ! — Alors je m'en vas." A translation is: "— If you don't leave, Monsieur Charmé\. you'll see! — Then I'll be off." The humour lies in the wonderfully understated exchange. The woman's warning is deliberately ambiguous—whether she threatens anger, exposure, or some greater consequence is left unsaid—while Monsieur Charmé immediately abandons any bravado and quietly retreats.
