Lithograph on paper, from the Series "Impressions de Ménage", plate 5. An original nineteenth-century lithograph by the celebrated French artist Paul Gavarni, from his renowned satirical series Impressions de Ménage ("Impressions of Married Life"). Published by Chez Panier, Rue du Croissant, Paris, and printed by Aubert & Cie, the series humorously explores the realities of marriage and domestic life through witty observations and subtle social commentary. This outdoor scene portrays a rural couple in which the wife, bent beneath the weight of a heavily laden basket strapped to her back, carries both provisions and household goods while her husband stands comfortably beside her, absorbed in reading a document. Beneath the image appears a quotation from the French Civil Code (Article 212): "Les époux se doivent mutuellement fidélité, secours, assistance." ("Spouses owe one another mutual fidelity, support, and assistance.") Gavarni's satire rests in the obvious contradiction between the lofty legal ideal and the reality before the viewer. While the law proclaims mutual assistance, the husband offers none, leaving his wife to bear the physical burden while he occupies himself with reading. The contrast between legal principle and everyday behaviour creates the humour, exposing the disparity between official expectations of marriage and the lived experience of many nineteenth-century women. Rendered with Gavarni's characteristic economy of line and expressive lithographic shading, the composition transforms a simple rural anecdote into a pointed critique of gender roles and marital responsibility. The exaggerated imbalance of labour, paired with the ironic legal quotation, exemplifies the artist's sophisticated blend of comedy and social observation. Good overall condition, with a clear, well-preserved impression. The sheet exhibits light age toning, scattered foxing, faint handling creases, and minor edge wear consistent with age. The printed image remains strong and well-defined throughout. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
