An original nineteenth-century lithograph by the celebrated French artist Paul Gavarni, from his acclaimed satirical series Impressions de Ménage ("Impressions of Married Life"). Published by Chez Panier, Rue du Croissant, Paris, and printed by Aubert & Cie, the series humorously and perceptively examines the changing dynamics of bourgeois marriage through scenes drawn from everyday domestic life. This opening plate of the series presents a married couple strolling together in a garden. The husband gazes thoughtfully into the distance while his wife walks slightly ahead, her back turned toward him. Their conversation provides the wit that transforms an otherwise tranquil promenade into a subtle reflection on married life. The accompanying dialogue reads: "— Camille, dis donc! quand nous nous sommes mariés les hirondelles arrivaient. — Et puis? — Les voilà déjà qui s'en retournent. — Eh bien, c'est comme tes galanteries, monsieur Prévalu." A translation reads: "— Camille, you know, when we were married the swallows were arriving. — And then? — Look, they're already flying back again. — Well, it's just like your attentions, Monsieur Prévalu." The husband's sentimental observation that an entire season has passed since their marriage is immediately answered by his wife's pointed reply: just as the swallows have come and gone, so too have his romantic attentions. Gavarni gently satirises the familiar complaint that the enthusiasm of courtship often fades soon after marriage, replacing youthful gallantry with everyday routine. Condition: Good overall condition, with a clear, well-preserved impression. The sheet displays light age toning, scattered foxing, faint handling marks, and several soft vertical fold lines visible across the paper. Minor surface soiling and slight discolouration are present, consistent with age. The lithographic image retains strong tonal contrasts and fine detail. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
