Lithograph on paper from the Series "Impressions de Ménage" (Plate 10). An original nineteenth-century lithograph by the celebrated French artist Paul Gavarni, from his acclaimed satirical series Impressions de Ménage ("Impressions of Married Life"). Published by Chez Panier, Rue du Croissant, Paris, and printed by Aubert & Cie, the series presents a humorous yet penetrating examination of marriage, domestic life, and bourgeois society in nineteenth-century France. This amusing interior scene depicts a husband lingering in the bedroom while his wife, still in bed, attempts to send him on his way. The dialogue printed beneath the image reads: "— Théodore, voyons ! qu'est-ce que tu viens faire ici ? va-t-en ! — Caroline, veux-tu me faire mon nœud ? — Monsieur Théodore, voulez-vous bien vous en aller !" ("— Théodore, really! What are you doing in here? Go away! — Caroline, will you tie my cravat? — Monsieur Théodore, would you kindly leave!") The humour lies in the husband's transparent excuse for remaining in the bedroom, inventing a trivial need for assistance simply to prolong his stay. His wife's increasingly formal and impatient response transforms a familiar domestic exchange into a comic study of married affection, dependence, and everyday irritation. Gavarni's wit derives not from exaggerated caricature but from the recognisable habits and negotiations of domestic life. Executed with confident lithographic technique, the composition balances strong tonal contrasts with delicate line work. The partially opened door, unmade bed, and casually discarded clothing reinforce the intimate setting, while the restrained gestures of the unseen wife and lingering husband communicate the narrative with remarkable economy and charm. Good overall condition, with a clear, well-preserved impression. The sheet displays light age toning, scattered foxing, faint handling creases, and minor edge wear consistent with age. The printed image retains strong tonal quality and excellent clarity. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
