Lithograph on paper, from the Series "Impressions de Ménage", plate 19. An original nineteenth-century lithograph by the celebrated French artist Paul Gavarni, from his celebrated satirical series Impressions de Ménage ("Impressions of Married Life"). Published by Chez Panier, Rue du Croissant, Paris, and printed by Aubert & Cie, the series offers witty and perceptive observations on marriage, courtship, and the customs of bourgeois society in nineteenth-century France. This elegant composition depicts a husband and wife walking side by side in the countryside. Although physically close, they face slightly away from one another, suggesting emotional distance despite their shared path. Beneath the image appears the succinct caption: "À deux n'être qu'un, ou l'on n'est plus deux." A loose translation reads: "When two become one—or else they are no longer two." The phrase alludes to the traditional ideal of marriage in which husband and wife become "one flesh," while simultaneously hinting at the paradox that individual identity can disappear within the marital union. Gavarni leaves the interpretation deliberately ambiguous. The couple's restrained body language invites viewers to reflect on the balance between companionship and independence, affection and individuality. As throughout the series, humour arises not from overt caricature but from the quiet irony embedded in familiar domestic truths. The simplicity of the composition enhances its psychological subtlety. The broad landscape and minimal setting focus attention on the figures themselves, while Gavarni's fluid draftsmanship and delicate lithographic shading convey character with remarkable economy of line. The result is an image that is both graceful and quietly satirical. Condition: Good overall condition, with a clear, well-preserved impression. The sheet displays light age toning, scattered foxing, minor handling marks, and slight edge wear consistent with age. The printed image remains crisp and well-defined throughout.
